Parent Company

Cowin & Company, Inc. has been in the business of giving customers what they want for more than 70 years. This tradition began with mining engineer Percy G. Cowin who established the Birmingham based company in 1924.
Most of Cowin´s mine construction during the 30´s and 40´s was in Alabama and surrounding states. With the decline of coal and iron ore mining in the 50´s and 60´s, the company diversified, turning to highway, railroad, hydro and sewer tunnel engineering and construction. Diversification brought expansion - into the mid-Atlantic and mid-western states where clients quickly discovered Cowin´s dependable reputation.
Today, John J. Cowin continues the leadership of the firm which his father founded. John entered the business after earning engineering degrees at Stanford University and the Universtity of Alabama. Except for military service, he has spent his entire career in the underground construction industry.
Cowin´s customers include many of the nation´s leading mining and electric power companies, railroads, and other heavy industrial firms. Cowin has handled projects for the U.S. Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Public Roads and state and municipal governmental agencies.
Over the years Cowin has gained a thorough knowledge of mine design, and are experienced in every phase of underground coal and metal mine construction: shafts, slopes, inclines, concrete and shotcrete construction, as well as the installation of bins, feeders, conveyers, skip loadings and hoisting equipment and the like. Cowin offers pre-construction exploration, feasibility studies and cost analyses for customer projects.
Cowin´s clients know they can depend on the company´s engineering and field construction staff to bring technical skill and high safety standards to every job. Each project, whether large or small, receives the personal attention of their top management as conditions dictate. Because of this, much of the firm´s business consists of repeat customers.
Cowin will meet the client´s schedule, site requirements, and will cooperate with other contractors on the same site doing other work, and will schedule work at night, on weekends or holidays, or any other time required.
Much of Cowin´s work is obtained through straight competitive bidding but they often contract on a cost-plus fee or similar basis. Many times uncertainties about conditions to be encounterd, such as an unclearly defined scope of work(as in some exploration projects, for example), or other factors may make one form of payment more suitable than another. Cowin is agreeable to any equitable arrangement that suits the project and the customer, and is committed to working with and for the client.
